Well, It's Monday

My Mantra this week is going to remain the same. I've really felt that one week is not long enough to dedicate to really, truly focusing on a mantra. For that reason, Mantra Monday will now be a monthly feature.

In more interesting news...

I've started really using a planner now. I really really enjoy using it and look at how pretty it is! That's really all I wanted to do, show off my planner decorating skills.

Mantra Monday: It is Enough.

Mantra(n.) : a sound, word, or phrase that is repeated by someone who is praying or meditation : a word or phrase that is repeated often or that expresses someone's basic beliefs
Recently I've been thinking about all the things I need to get done and want to do and should do. For this week, I feel I should remind myself that whatever it is I am able to do is enough. If I only write 20,000 words this month, that is enough. If I only go to the gym for 30 minutes before I'm too tired to continue, that is enough. As long as I've truly, honestly tried, it is enough. I am enough.

What is your Mantra this week?

Friday Apology

Hey guys. This week has been pretty insane, so I don't have an original post so... here's things from recently!

This video is by Emily Diana Ruth (Emilyofnewgloom) on Youtube. It was her film school thesis and it is absolutely beautiful

Guys, guys, guys. These Dark Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nuts are the best little office sweet treat in the world! I found them at World Market for $4. This may be my 3rd back in two weeks. SO DELICIOUS!

Lastly, I've taken up origami, sort of. Very simply little things, but I really wanted something interesting to do with my hands when I'm out and about. So far I'm only working on Cranes and Rabbits, but I'm proud of them.

How has your week been? What are some things that you'd like to share about your week?

Mantra Monday: You got this.

Mantra(n.) : a sound, word, or phrase that is repeated by someone who is praying or meditating : a word or phrase that is repeated often or that expresses someone's basic beliefs
On this little Mantra Monday, I've decided to motivate myself with a simple, "You got this!" I'm working on quite a few different projects right now that I'm finding it hard to get the motivation. More than just the Mantra, here's a list to myself.

Things you totes got:

  • Getting up better/earlier.
  • Camp NaNoWriMo. Even when you're behind, you're going to win!
  • Book Club.
  • Journaling often.
  • Work.
  • Other work.
  • Saving money for a house.
  • Being positive.
What's your Mantra for the week? What things do you "totes got"?

Bonus Friday #1

I hope your week has been well! Mine's been fairly slow work wise and fairly insane otherwise! On this lovely Friday, I'm straying away from my normal posting schedule (Mondays and Wednesdays) to share a little something extra with you.

This Month, I've decided to take on a few different tasks/challenges/activities outside of my normal. One of these is Camp NaNoWriMo! For those who don't know, way back in November 2012 I participated in the National Novel Writing Month (see my write up here). I'm still very proud to say that my first ever NaNoWriMo was a success! But that was almost two years ago now and I've not been able to pen another novel since! So, here we go with another NaNoWriMo Challenge, Camp NaNoWriMo!

Camp NaNoWriMo is quite a bit different than November's challenge. Most noticeable is the ability to set your own word-count goals! Because I managed 50,000 words in a month last time, this time I'm aiming for 52,000 words for my second novel in the series! 2,200 words down, 49,800 left to go!

Secondly, I'm participating in the first month of the NovelTea Book Club, hosted over at My Life as a Teacup. ook for the month of July is Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore. So far so good. I really am loving the facebook group where we have the discussions about the books. There are so many wonderful people participating with so many interesting ideas and things to say that I love getting on the page 100% of the time!

What big things are you wanting to accomplish this month? Are you participating in the NovelTea Book Club or Camp NaNoWriMo?

PEP! Camp

Steve and his children come out to help us all learn to love, or at least tolerate our reptile friends!
The last two weeks of June were perhaps some of the best weeks I've had volunteering in a long time. I haven't talked about it here before, but I'm currently interning with a local nonprofit called the Pet Education Project (PEP!) Part of my interning for a couple of weeks involved being a councilor and organizer for the yearly kid's summer camp! I've never had so much fun conquering fears and educating kids.

We spent the two sessions of camp with some amazing #animalheros learning all about the 5 components of pet care: Food, Water, Shelter, Care, and Love. Each day of each session we dedicated to learning about proper pet nutrition, shelters, toys, microchipping, spay/neuter, heartworm prevention and treatment, being your pet's best friend, and being an #animalhero! I was amazed at how well the elementary aged children grasped the concepts and related them to their own life. I'm so proud to have been a part of this amazing experience!

Is it next June yet?! I'm ready for more #PEPCamp!

One of our (Magic Happen's Rabbit Rescue NWLA) buns, Caddo, put's on a show for Care Day!
Learning about Spay/Neuter gets fun with this game the PEP! volunteers and board developed!
Keith and I conquer our fears of snakes with the help of a sweet, talkative camper.

The younger ladies of the first week help build the perfect rabbit home.
Even the younger girls and Dudley the dog love to learn about Spay/Neuter!
The ferrets even came all the way from NYC to play!

If you'd like to see more pictures or get more information visit the PEP! Page on Facebook and/or visit ilovepep.org!

What's the most fun you've ever had volunteering for a worthy cause? What would you do if you were hosting/creating a camp for kids?

Mantra Monday: Be Present

Mantra(n.) : a sound, word, or phrase that is repeated by someone who is praying or meditating : a word or phrase that is repeated often or that expresses someone's basic beliefs
Last week I decided to stop being "sorry." That went well, but I think it is something I will always have to work on. For this week, my mantra is "Be Present." These last two weeks have been crazy hectic and busy, so this week as things slow down I am going to focus on being present, in the moment, and happy with myself and where I am at this moment.

How did you last week go? What is your Mantra this week?

Snapshot: Independence

Snapshot posts are short little posts covering a very small topic that mostly consist of ramblings. ENJOY!

I've been thinking a lot about independence recently. With Keith moving into my house with me, my mom, and step-dad, we've been spending a lot of time together. As we both, basically, live in a single 8'x11'ish room we don't really have much of a chance to be independent. Don't get me wrong, I love to spend time with Keith, however, I've always hated couples that "must" eat at the same time or go to bed at the exact same time. Based on our situation, though, we don't have much of a choice. If one of us stays up later, we chance waking up whoever is sleeping. I love love love living with my love, I just wish we had more time and space to be independent. With the weather as hot as it is in the Louisiana summer, we can't even really go outside and enjoy our time there.

I haven't been reading or writing or filming videos (most because I need more space to film) or even keeping up very well with this blog. I find it all very frustrating.

This is a very long-winded way of saying... I'm ready to have our own place!

(Also, the photo is a beautiful little stream/river in Germany that was close to my home-stay family's house! I mostly just picked that one to show off how pretty it was!)

How do you maintain your sense of independence while living in close proximity to others?

Mantra Monday: Don't Be Sorry (A.k.a The Beginning)

Hello and welcome to another lovely Monday morning! Over the weekend I decided to take on the challenge to "fix" or help myself with things I know I struggle with. So, Mantra Monday has been born!
Mantra(n.) : a sound, word, or phrase that is repeated by someone who is praying or meditating
: a word or phrase that is repeated often or that expresses someone's basic beliefs
Mantra, in the way I'm using it here, is something that is repeated frequently. For my first weekly Mantra I've chosen something I truly know I need to work on and have been told I need to work on, which is say "sorry" for anything. Hiccuped? "I'm sorry." Someone bumps into me entirely outside of my control? "I'm sorry." According to Keith, I even say "I'm sorry" in my sleep! So today, the first day of the first week of my weekly Mantras, I will not be sorry. Instead of apologizing for something I didn't do, I will say silently to myself "Don't be sorry."

What would you like to work on this week? Will you join me in creating a Mantra this week?

Rae Does Baton Rouge

Fun Fact: My best friend turned 21!!

And because of that fun fact, we went to Baton Rouge for the weekend for shopping craziness! It was really a lot of fun, and I'm sure there's more to do in Baton Rouge, but I'd certainly return just for that mall! It's huge and crazy and wonderful!

But before the mall, the night we rolled into town, we went down to Perkins Rowe to look around and have a lovely dinner. For dinner we went to Texas de Brazil, which is a Brazilian style steakhouse which is very interesting. By far, my favorite part of the experience at Texas de Brazil was the salad bar! There were so many options and such interesting items. When you're ready, you flip your little coin and the very nice staff will parade different cuts and preparations of meat around for your sampling. It's a very interesting experience, even though I wasn't super impressed with the meats. (Note: I don't eat much meat anyway.) Overall, I'd give Texas de Brazil a 3/5 star rating just based on the salad bar and the interesting experience.

The next morning, we headed for the mall and the shopping! I am so impressed by the size of the Mall of Louisiana! There are about a million different stores and many of them are 2 stories! Personally, I really loved getting to visit my second Lush Store ever! I so love Lush. The Hot Topic, Forever 21, and Victoria's Secret were also really nice. There was just such an array of shops to wander in and out of that I couldn't keep up with everything.

All in all, great experience! I always love getting out of town and exploring the fun things to do close to home but more than that I love getting to spend a whole weekend just me and my girl! HAPPY 21st MISS JORDY! SO MUCH LOVE! <3

What are some of your favorite weekend trips close to where you live?

A New Direction: Rae Goes Away

My name is Raelynn and it has been over 1 year since I've last blogged.

A YEAR! Can you believe it?! Last I was here, I was a Sophomore English major on track to study abroad in Ireland, go into the Peace Corps, and head off to grad school for Linguistics. My how a year changes things. Here are some major points:

  • I'm now a Sociology Major, with a focus on Social Work and a minor in Nonprofit Administration.
  • While I still hope to go abroad, I'm looking more into internships in global aid.
  • Peace Corps is not out of the question, but it seems a little impractical by the time I'll finally finish my undergrad. I have 6 semesters left...
  • I hope to go to Grad School for Counseling. I still love linguistics and study it independently, my heart really lies in helping others however I can. I'd love to work the "messy" cases most people don't want to know exist. I want to help the rape victims, the violence victims, those with mental illnesses, and, should I have the opportunity, genocide survivors, political refugees, and the like.
  • I'm still writing. I'm beginning my second book next month and another in November. I've not yet approached any agents though, I want to flesh out the entire world to present, not just one novel.
  • I have a new boyfriend. See here: Hiatus: Wii Unboxing! "(aka This is Keith)
  • AND CHECK IT! NEW BLOG NAME!! LIFEDUCKS = RAE GOES AWAY! (I call that fair warning I will most likely disappear again.)

I guess those are the things that were before and now are changing, but a lot of entirely new things are happening too! Here, have another bulleted list:
  • I'M MOVING OUT! As soon as Keith can find a job and we save the money we'll be getting our own place! I'm crazy excited about that, so be prepared for weird posts about moving and decor.
  • I'm interning with a local nonprofit called PEP! (The Pet Education Project!).
  • Keith and I are opening a nonprofit... in the future. That sounds a little weird and sketchy but it's happening and I will undoubtably say something about it eventually.
image

So, if you were wondering, life's good. I'm really wanting to get back into blogging and vlogging and everything I really enjoyed doing online. With school and work and interning and life it'll be hard, but I really do love it so hopefully some of you lovely readers will stick around?

That being said, since my life has changed so much my blogging will, inevitably, as well. If you didn't notice, last year, in general, my blogging was less about books I'd read and more just about books in general. I simply don't have the time to read like I used to. And what I do read I don't think anyone will be interested in. So, I think the biggest change to my blogging content will be the lessening of book talk. I still love to read and to buy books for those far off times when I will have time to read, but books take up far less of my life than they once did. Instead, I'll be posting more about my life and things I think about and do. Expect travel pieces, expect rants, expect introspection, expect DIYs and [failed] DIYs, expect recipes, expect anything.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is I'm really going to try to dedicate myself to blogging again and that this isn't "Lifeducks" as you knew it (or didn't know it). Rae Goes Away is a just another lifestyle blog about random things in the life of a random girl somewhere in the world doing random things like someone cares. I hope you'll stick around.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Not A Book Review

At the beginning of this semester, in January, I read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for a class. I was very excited to read a contemporary novel in a class and I just knew I'd be dying to review it. About 3 months later, that review hasn't happened. So what did happen?

I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. I was a good book, but that's all I have to say about it. It is outside of my normal genre, but that shouldn't mean I can't review it. I have, in the past, reviewed novels of all different types, so why not this one?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is about a journalist, Blomkvist, who is called to an island by a rich, old company head. His formal reason for being on the island is to write Mr. Vanger's biography. In reality, Mr. Vanger has asked Blomkvist to use his investigative techniques to look for the person who killed his granddaughter, Harriet. In the course of thinks Ms. Salander comes to work with Blomkvist and the two find a few too many skeletons in the closets of the Vanger family.

This book really didn't make me have any lasting feelings. It sounds enthralling, and it is. The beginning is kind of miserable because of the vast amount of exposition and the lack of action, but it's survivable  When the action picks up, the action is fun. I felt satisfied with the climax and resolution and the ending is perfect for a sequel. These are the types of books I love, surprising, well-developed, and well-written. But this one just didn't do it for me. I don't know why, but I simply do not and have not felt moved to review or even write about this book.

Perhaps you've had better luck with this novel or series. Have you read this book/series? What did you think? Did it make you feel anything?

Blog Tour: How Fostino became... Fostino by Sara Celi (The Undesireable)

YANR_BlogTour_Undesirable
Author Sara Celi has stopped by today with a guest post for The Undesirable Blog Tour!

How Fostino became...Fostino
Naming a character might be one of the best parts of writing a book, but it can also be one of the hardest. You want to get the character names just right because (if readers are anything like me) impression are sometimes created by the name of character. When it came to Fostino, the male love interest for The Undesirable, I had a really hard time naming him. I kicked around about ten different names for him, and not one of them felt right. I could see him in my head, and almost hear him speaking in my mind, but I didn’t think any name I tried out for him worked. Would you believe an early name for this character was Derek? Yes, friends, it was. Fostino needed a certain name--an unusual name, a name that would immediately put him at odds with a community hellbent on conformity and “fitting in.” But after several weeks of trying on different names, I just couldn’t figure out a name that fit. In short, I was stuck. Enter my friend Jacob. He works with me at my day job as a photographer (I’m a TV anchor and reporter) and we sometimes work on stories that take up several hours of our day. It’s the kind of work environment that allows you get to pretty close to your co-workers. After almost two years of working together often, he and I are pretty tight.
By the time we got in a car one day on the way to Ft. Sill from Oklahoma City, he knew I had started writing a book. He knew about where I was in the story. And he even know how much anguish the male lead’s name had been causing me.
So, he did what he usually does. He forced me to talk about it. He asked probing questions and even teased me a little until I opened up.
And that’s when it began.
He tossed out a name. I toss out one. I pulled out my trusty Moleskine notebook and started jotting them down. He said another. I brought up two others. By about 10 miles from Ft. Sill, that notebook had a list of about 25 names.
Only one of those names had a big circle and star. It was the one that rang true.
Fostino.

How to: Survive a Cold

Friday afternoon, I started to develop a cold. Did that send me running home, like it should have? Of course not! I proceeded to go to see a film. Not the best of ideas. I spent all Saturday in bed sleeping and watching films. I survived the worst of my cold and here's how I did it!

  1. Conclude you are sick and draw massive amounts of sympathy from any parental or caregiving person in the immediate area. Nothing sucks worse than checking your own temperature and having absolutely no one to feel as sorry for you as you do yourself.
  2. Watch far too many of your guilty pleasures. I managed to catch up on Pretty Little Liars and Lost Girl. Any animated favorites are highly suggested. A few of my favorites are: Lilo & Stitch, Tarzan, The Last Unicorn, and How to Train Your Dragon.
  3. Naps. Sleep. Really anything that involves dozing in and out all day is perfect. When you're sick nothing feels better than sleeping and resting all day.
  4. While watching your guilty pleasures and between naps, colour! Yes, with crayons and a colouring book. Concentrating on something other than how pitiful you feel will help. Scouts honour. Bonus points if you keep a stuffed friend near by (they can't catch your germs!)
  5. Drink lots of water. For real, this one's really important. They say "liquids" but really water is best. I hate drinking water, but when I'm sick I drink several bottles a day. Hydration, it's good.
Those are just my suggestions.

How do you spend your days home with a cold? What really makes you feel better?
